Getting the Most from Lectures, Map Nights and the AGM

Each of our event formats rewards a slightly different kind of preparation, so a little planning beforehand can turn a pleasant evening into a genuinely useful one.

Before a lecture

Talks often draw on fieldwork, regional case studies or new research in physical and human geography. If the topic concerns a particular landscape, such as the Great Dividing Range, the Channel Country or the reef coast, it helps to look at a map of the area first. Knowing where the rivers run, where the escarpments rise and how settlements are spread makes the speaker's argument far easier to follow. Bring a notebook. Question time is often where the most interesting local knowledge comes out, especially when audience members have walked, farmed or surveyed the places being discussed.

At a map night

Map nights are hands-on. Expect to compare historical and modern sheets, read contour lines, trace how coastlines and floodplains have been redrawn, or talk through how a digital map is built from layers of spatial data. Old parish and county maps of Queensland are particularly rewarding, because they show how land was divided and named long before today's suburbs appeared. If you own an interesting map, a family survey plan or a well-used walking chart, consider bringing it along. Shared material often sparks the best conversations.

Taking part in the AGM

The Annual General Meeting is where members review the past year, hear reports on finances and activities, and help shape priorities such as future field trips and talks. Members usually receive papers ahead of the meeting. Reading them in advance means you can raise questions or suggestions with confidence. If you are not yet a member and would like a voice in these decisions, see our membership page.

Practical tips

  • Confirm the date, venue and any registration requirements before you set out, as details can change.
  • Allow time for Brisbane traffic or public transport connections, particularly on weeknights.
