Reading these places as a geographer

Each place on this list tells part of the story of how Brisbane fits into its landscape. Taken together, they make a compact field course in river geography, landform, ecology and urban growth, and most can be reached by public transport, ferry or a short drive from the city centre.

The river and its bends

The Brisbane River shapes almost everything here. Its tight meanders created the peninsulas of Kangaroo Point and the CBD, which is why the Story Bridge crosses where it does, and why the City Botanic Gardens sit on low ground inside a bend. That low ground has flooded in the past, so walking the riverbank is a good way to think about floodplains, levees and how a city lives with a tidal river. South Bank, on the opposite shore, shows how former industrial and port land can be reshaped into public space.

Higher ground and wider views

Mount Coot-tha, on the western edge of the city, gives the clearest overview of Brisbane's setting: the river winding east towards Moreton Bay, the suburbs spreading across the coastal plain, and on clear days the islands on the horizon. It is worth bringing a map and matching landmarks to what you see.

Bay, sand and wildlife

Moreton Island is one of the large sand islands that shelter Moreton Bay, and a reminder of how wind and sea build landforms over long periods. Access is by vehicle or passenger ferry from the mainland, so plan transport and check operators' timetables well ahead. Closer in, Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary and the Queensland Museum help connect landscape to the native species and natural history of the region.
