Getting the Most from Maps, Field Trips and Podcasts

Geography makes the most sense when you combine several ways of learning. A map shows patterns, a field trip lets you test those patterns on the ground, and a good conversation explains why they matter. Here are some practical ways to bring the three together, with a particular eye on south-east Queensland.

Reading maps with purpose

Before heading out, spend a few minutes with a topographic map of the area you plan to visit. Contour lines show where the land rises towards ranges such as the D'Aguilar Range north-west of Brisbane, and where it flattens into the floodplains of the Brisbane River. Comparing a current map with an older edition often shows how suburbs, roads and river crossings have changed. Flood-extent maps published by local councils are especially useful in Brisbane, where the river has shaped settlement for as long as the city has existed.

Preparing for time in the field

Field geography rewards preparation. Useful habits include:

  • Checking weather and tide information, particularly for coastal sites around Moreton Bay.
  • Carrying water, sun protection and sturdy footwear, which are essential in the Queensland climate.
  • Bringing a notebook or phone to record observations, sketches and photographs with location notes.
  • Respecting private land, national park rules and places of significance to Traditional Owners.

You can find upcoming outings on our field trips page, and talks and gatherings on the events page.

Listening to deepen understanding

Podcasts are an easy way to keep learning between outings. Listening to an episode about landforms, climate or urban change before a trip gives you questions to bring along. Listening again afterwards often reveals details you missed the first time. Browse our podcast shelf for topics that match your interests, from local landscapes to global themes.

Used together, these resources turn geography from a subject you read about into something you observe, question and understand in the places around you.
