How Our Maps, Field Trips and Podcasts Fit Together

Geography makes the most sense when you approach a place from several angles at once. A map shows you the shape of a landscape, a field trip lets you feel its slopes and soils underfoot, and a good conversation explains why it looks the way it does. Our resources are designed to work together in exactly that way, so a reader can move from desk study to firsthand observation and back again.

Start with the map

Before heading out, it helps to read a topographic map of the area you plan to visit. Contour lines reveal ridges, gullies and floodplains, and in South East Queensland they quickly tell a story: the Brisbane River winding across its broad floodplain, the D'Aguilar Range rising to the west, and Moreton Bay's sand islands sheltering the coast. Noticing these patterns in advance turns a walk into a lesson in landforms.

Go and look

Our field trips build on that preparation. Out in the landscape you can see how rock type shapes vegetation, how creeks respond to heavy summer rain, and how settlement has followed water, rail lines and fertile ground. Bring a notebook, sturdy shoes, water and sun protection, because Queensland conditions can change quickly and the sun is strong for much of the year.

Listen and reflect

After a trip, our podcasts offer a chance to go deeper, covering topics such as climate, coastal change, urban growth and the long history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander connection to Country. Hearing different perspectives helps place what you saw into a wider regional and global context.

Keep exploring

Geography is a lifelong habit rather than a single subject. Browse our upcoming events for talks and gatherings, and you will find that each map read, place visited and discussion heard adds another layer to your understanding of Queensland and the wider world.
